Hare and Tortoise

Located at the heart of Kensington, the Hare and Tortoise serves authentic Japanese cuisine from its high street restaurant in West London. The restaurant enjoys a thriving trade as a result of its popular menus and traditional oriental decor.

The renovation marries the Hare and Tortoise’s classic oriental styles with bold, sharp design for a contemporary feel to its kitchens and restaurant.

To accomplish this, the designs incorporated vertical maple slatted wall panels, backed with mirror finish bronze, rising to meet further maple slats across the ceiling for a warm, atmospheric aesthetic.

We also fitted a new tiled wall and floor finishes throughout the basement, supported by all new sanitary ware. New heating, ventilation and air conditioning units provided increased functionality, improving conditions throughout the restaurant.

What were the main challenges during construction?

The renovation incorporated a new extract system and canopy, which had to comply with current regulations without detracting from service or diners’ experiences.

Increasing the capacity of the electrical and gas services into the building, and installing the complex mechanical services from the basement and ground floor to the roof, was the most challenging aspect of this refit.

How satisfied was the Hare and Tortoise with the completed project?

The client was once again delighted with the outcome, in particular with our high standard of of joinery and manufacture, resulting in a now busy and successful restaurant.
